The US wants Kenya to tighten rules on environmental protection and conserving natural resources as negotiations for a new trade deal between the two nations intensify. In the latest set of proposed texts in the targeted trade deal, the US is seeking greater commitment from Kenya to strengthen laws and rules on environmental protection with a key focus on conserving natural resources.

After a series of elephant attacks in Tripura’s Khowai and Gomati districts in the last few months, the State Government on Tuesday announced a series of steps to combat human-animal conflict. Among them would be trenches and growing plants disliked by the jumbos near human habitations on identified elephant corridors to make sure the wild tuskers, said Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma.

Electrified fences set up around farms are an emerging threat to the critically endangered Sumatran elephant, conservationists told Mongabay Indonesia following a series of deaths this year in Aceh and Jambi provinces. Wishnu Sukmantoro of(FKGI) said the death of a Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) in Jambi’s Tebo district in May was likely caused by an electric fence, the first reported case in the province.

Two elephants that have been scared to death by the action of the local people, have been separated from their herd and are roaming in the fringe areas of Puttur and Sullia taluks in Dakshina Kannada since late evening on June 10. They are now hiding near Kedambadi village few meters away from the residence of the MLA of Puttur Ashok Kumar Rai when the reports came in last at 8.30 pm on Tuesday (June 11).

Bhubaneswar: An elderly woman was trampled to death in Tnguri Reserve Forest under Badamba Range in Athagarh, on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Gayadhar Dehuri, a resident of Khalimati village under Badamba police limits. According to sources, the elderly woman had gone to Tanguri Reserve Forest to collect wood on Tuesday. As she delayed returning home, her family members made a frantic search for her.

A wild elephant trampled to death the owner of a private lodge in Alipurduar early on Tuesday morning. Sources said the incident took place at Uttar Simlabari village that is adjacent to Chilapata forest and under Alipurduar–I block. Around 4am, a lone tusker came out of Chilapata forest and damaged a hut at Deodanga of Simlabari.

NILGIRIS: To prevent the electrocution of wild elephants, officials of the Nilgiris forest division have started removing jackfruits from trees that are close to overhead power lines in and around Coonoor and Kotagiri. The decision was taken after an elephant was electrocuted when it tried to reach the fruit in a private land at Kunjapanai in Kotagiri last month.
